This game is my introduction to Twine so it was definitely a learning process but I wanted to tell a story of grief and teach a lesson to the readers that animals aren’t below humans. As the player follows the ghost of a deceased dog, the dog teaches a lesson to the player that essentially every animal deserves a loving home, and even if their humans hurt when they’re gone they know they did everything in their power to give them a happy life. That humans have the power to decide whether an animal will die prematurely or live out their days in the best way possible. I wanted the dog’s origin, in the beginning, to be a mystery so that the words they share with the player have more meaning when they’re gone. I do this by having the player follow the dog without knowing the destination and attempting to give the dog a more ethereal feel to them, especially since I made them able to talk. There are interactive moments such as where the dog knows the player’s name without you telling them and looking for the dog around the screen which adds to the immersion. There are a few narrative decisions you can make that add to the dramatic agency but there is only one ending since I intentionally wanted the story to be linear with the player taking in what the dog has to say.
