This game surrounds the premise of how fish are assumed to not be self-aware and so the fish in the game ends up figuring out how to be self-aware. I found this idea from a recent article that states fish may be self-aware and so I wanted to explore the idea of how a fish became self-aware and how it affects/makes them feel. The game gives context to this notion and then moves on to the journey of the fish becoming self-aware. A thought that this game can invoke is exactly how superior are humans in comparison to other species when we share some similar qualities. I show this in the game by explaining that humans are superior in the beginning but then having a fish also have the same ability by the end and so it can leave the player wondering are humans really that superior? I used a conditional dialogue option to give the player a sense of becoming self-aware once they find the mirror and the fish then accepts them instead of not believing them. Speaking of the mirror, it is my one variable to give the player a sense of how the fish became self-aware since they found the mirror and are able to see themselves. There are also other features such as during the reflection rooms, the player isn’t able to walk directly to their counterpart to show the disconnect that the fish feels with themselves in the mirror and you have to go around to be able to interact with it in comparison to the other reflection rooms where you can walk right up to the sprite.
